Must see and do in Perth

Fremantle: 19km south west of Perth. Founded in 1829, Fremantle is a colorful, busy port at the mouth of the Swan River, easily accessible by bus, train, ferry and taxi. Visit the Fremantle Arts Centre, the Maritime Museum and the Round House. Other attractions not to be missed include the markets and the Fishing Boat Harbour. The best way to get the feel for the place is to relax at one of the many alfresco cafes on the “Cappuccino Strip”,South Terrace where you can enjoy street entertainment. Rottnest Island: 18km of the coast of Fremantle. The island is known for its quokkas (small marsupials), beautiful beaches and clear waters teeming with marine life. Activities include swimming, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, golf and hiking. Bicycles are the main form of transport on the island. Ferry services leave daily from Fremantle and Perth.

Penguin and seal islands: 42km south of Perth,Penguin Island lying 600m offshore and accessible by ferry, is home to adiverse array of wildlife, marine and coastal scenery and an interpretive centre, regular cruises operate to Penguin and Seal Islands in the Shoal water marine Park where you’ll see little penguins, sea lions, dolphins, rare birds,hermit caves and spectacular rock formations. Open from October to May.

The south-west has surf beaches, beautiful bays and caves to explore.Travel inland through stately forests: see carpets of wildflowers(September-October) and rolling vineyards. The picturesque town of Margaret river, 280km south of Perth is noted for its wineries, surfing beaches, bear by limestone caves, swimming, fishing scenic drives and the annual Leeuwin Estate concert.

The Pinnacles: 260km north of Perth, Part of the Numbung National Park, The Pinnacles are the eroded remains of an ancient landscape which stretches early across the desert. Thousands of limestone pillars, up to 4 meters tall rise out of a stark landscape of yellow sand. Best visited on a full-day coach or 4WD tour from Perth.

The Gascoyne region features Shark Bay.830km north of Perth, a World Heritage-listed area.  It is home to a large range of marine wildlife such as the friendly dolphins that come into the shallows each day at Monkey Mia Ningaloo Reef, further north, is Australia’s closest fringing world’s biggest fish, the whale shark regularly visits these waters during March to early June, and swimming with these gentle giants is a once-in-a lifetime experience.

Broome: 2.213km north of Perth, A pearling centre with a magnificent beach, a historic Chinatown area and a Japanese cemetery which stands as a monument to the divers who lost their lives seeking the elusive pearl. Relax on Cable Beach, 6km from Broome, visit Willie Creek Pearl Farm or“go bush” on a 4WD safari to Windjana and Geikie Gorges.
